Back to the East Coast: Summer 2026: Part I
I traveled back to the DMV this summer. DC/MD is my absolute sweet spot. This is my 2nd summer back to back. While I love it here, it is more pricier than I can afford for everyday living. But living in Ohio which is still reasonably priced, I can take my overflow monies and travel to my favorite spots. Like my mom and dad, before me I don't travel to a wide range of places. I tend to go where I love and where as a solo traveler I feel comfortable and have big fun. And DC/MD fits that bill.
Again, I had an amazing time in DC/MD. I did so much in such a short time. This blog post is mostly a compilation of short videos that allow the viewer to get a glimpse of my time in the DMV. It also had to be broken up in two, maybe three blog parts because I did so much in such a short period. So as not to inundate the viewer, I have broken this down into parts. The first part is my departure from Cincy up my 2nd day in Maryland and DC. This style of blogging reflects my very casual lifestyle.
The beautiful drive on the East Coast. It is like therapy for me. I enjoy the green lush scenic views and I enjoy driving solo so I can focus on my thoughts, and the drive. It gives me the time to exhale from my regular routine. This next video is my beautiful drive.
Once I got into the area, I went straight to my girlfriend Jo's home. She has been so gratious because last summer I went straight to her place and stayed with her a couple of days, then moved onto DC to another friend for two nights, then took the 3 hour train ride to NYC to visit another friend for three days. That was last summer. This year, I stayed the same amount of days but stayed in MD and DC for this summer trip. The next video is of me, Jo and her sweet, but crazy dog Iggy. I love her...she is so funny! Jo, and I always have a great time!
This short snippet video is of me in 1987, while interning at The Smithsonian Institute American History Museum in Washington, DC black exhibit called "From Field to Factory The African American Migration from the South to the North, at 30 years old in SilverSpring. Md in 1987. As you can see, DC/MD has a lot of good memories for me. The video also includes me this summer 2026 in Georgetown, DC where I also frequented while being an intern.
The first thing on my vacation agenda was to go back from last summer to the Smithonsonian Institutes' the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Last summer 2025, I was not able to finish the tour of the museum so I made an tour date for the following day after I got into town. The museum is huge with lots of engaging stories and artifacts.
There are about four floors of exhibits that are so well documented and detailed. They follow mostly a chronological order from Africa up to current period. There is absolutely so much to see that it takes hours to go through. The flow of the museum exhibit is excellent and easy to follow and understand. Last year, I finished about two floors. I couldn't finish it, but this summer, coming back to the museum I finished it. If you are ever in DC make this your destination spot. It is worth it.
The next two shorts in the gift shop. Also, this year I took my time in the gift shop and found some lovely things to bring back to Cincy with me.
These are my purchases from the gift shop... I ended my tour going to this farm to table restaurant about ten minutes from the museum. I had this delicious chicken salad sandwich. There are so many things I love about DC/MD area. The food is amazing. It's nothing like the Midwest and I always miss their food.
Part II of my DC/MD summer 2026 vacation series picks up with Jo & I doing our usual city DC night life. The pulse of my spirit!
