Re-invent your image in 2015

It's a new year: It's time to refresh and own your image!

Ushering in a new year brings new resolutions, goals, and sometimes a bigger vision of who we are and what we want to accomplish. While making resolutions, and setting new goals may seem cliche,  there is something to be said about looking toward a new year as a new beginning and another opportunity to try it again! Not to say you didn't get it right last year or years pass, but there is always room for improvement and growth. My feeling is as long as you have breath, use it for the betterment of yourself and to help others. One of the ways you can refresh is by reinventing your image. My brand image reflects my love for fashion, image and style, but reinventing your image starts first from within, with a positive spirit, positive thoughts along with action steps to make it happen.

As a professional woman, I understand the impact and affect that appearance has on how you feel and the confidence or lack of confidence you exude. I often hear that people like and want to work with people who are confident. The funny thing is that confidence isn't as common as we think, especially among women. I believe that certain aspects of a woman's confidence erode as we try to please our family, friends and others at the expense of not living in our authenticity. The more we are true to who we are, the more confident we feel and look. So as we move into the new year, I would like to share a few tips to help women boost their confidence, and in turn move toward reinventing a fresh and new image for 2015!

Tip 1) Start off each morning spending five to ten minutes before getting out of bed reading positive literature, repeating positive affirmations, and/ or writing. With so much negativity, and stress coming from many directions, it is important to be strategic about finding and implementing ways to build and sustain our confidence and positive outlook. You need a few, simple and inexpensive tools to help you get started. First, purchase a journal that is visually pleasing. As a visual person, I find that colorful, and pretty journals will help get you in the practice of writing regularly. The same with a cute pen, I love pretty pens. I always look for cute pens that I use not only for writing, but as props in my photo shoots with business women. It is something more appealing about a fresh journal and pen that makes you want to use the. So invest in a cute journal, pen and other colorful materials and place them next to your bed. Also, have handy a supply of index cards available and, get into a routine of writing positive affirmations on the index cards, and carrying them around with you as you move throughout your day. Pull them out and read them to brighten and refresh your spirit and mindset. Many powerful and influential women use affirmation cards. Dr. Stacia Pierce carries a line of what she call action cards. If you follow Dr. Pierce, you know that like her; her cards are fashion forward. The image above is from Louise Hay, the guru of healing. She has an affirmations kit, which she gives away a few.  Personally, I often write my own affirmations and carry them around with me in a little cute case, that way I can pull them out especially during times that I know I need a boost in my spirit!

Tip 2) Envision the person you want to be and create it! External changes to our image, usually start with an internal vision or hunch. As an artist, I visualize ideas in my mind before I verbally articulate them. My ideas and concepts for brand makeover shoots, fashion editorial shoots and glamour shoots, often start with creative visualization or visual hunch. Strategically, I set my mind on an idea, or creative problem I'm trying to solve and then,  let my visions flow...aka I daydream! The same goes for reinventing a new image by using a vision board. Vision boards are popular and very helpful way to start off the new year! A vision board can help you focus specific aspects of your life you want refreshed, such as your spiritual life, family life or business life. It can also can help you to plan out your ideas for reinventing your style and image by selecting a collection of pictures, words, affirmations that help.  What message does your image send?

Consider the image you want to communicate for your career and for your vision board select images, words that will help create that message. Taking note of what you are drawn will help you visualize how you see yourself, and what you want or need to communicate to others. You can create a vision board using cut out magazines pictures and words glued to poster board paper, or you can use Pinterest, as on line vision board allowing you to electronically pull together your ideas and concepts through the images you collect and pin. I use both. I regularly use Pinterest to help my photography clients with ideas for pulling together brand image that fits who they are or reinventing a brand image they want to project. Don't discount the power and impact of appearance and image on your career and pursuing your dreams.

My business partner and my vision board. Her vision board is on top and mine at the bottom. We lined them up for one seamless message: to help women and girls to feel and look confident, while being bold and authentic Spirit & Soul Photography.

Have you ever noticed that most successful and powerful people take time to manage their looks and their image? Why because image and style...whether you like it or not communicates a visual message that is telling about who you are. As a professional woman, get in habit of keeping your look fresh and up to date especially when it involves connecting and making relationships with other professional people. You never know when you may meet that important client or business connection; so keep your look fresh!  And, keeping fresh look doesn't require breaking the bank. I often get contemporary, stylish clothing at upscale thrift shops. No one knows, at least not until now! :)

3) Make sure your image fits the message you want to send. Take note, do you want to project a confident, power image, a creative, but powerful image? Evaluate if your clothes, your posture convey that message, but more important, do the work (i.e. journaling, affirmation, etc) to go along with that confident outward look.

Reinvent your image by starting off your new year with fresh, and professional looking headshots.
