Be Bold, Be You; Be Beautiful!
What does it mean to 'fit into' your
image? What you wear isn't something to be taken lightly. It means being
authentic. It means appealing to the spirit within you even when the crowd goes
in another direction. Have you ever wanted to dress a certain way, but you were
concerned about what your friends, and family would say. I don't mean dressing
inappropriate, or showing too much skin. I simply am referring to the fact that
intuitively you realize that your style doesn't follow the trend or the friends
and family you hang out with. So what do most of us do?We stay in the lane of
the Status quo. For example, one day a middle age co-worker and I (I'm
middle-age too :) were in the ladies restroom at work, and she said,
"Karen, I love that skirt and those boots you have on. I wish I could wear
that?" I said, "why, can't you"? She replied with a sigh,
"My family would give me a hard time." Mind you, I wasn't dressed
outlandish nor was it club gear. I simply had on a slightly above-the-knee,
black and creme colored, A-line, tweed skirt with a creme colored swing
sweater, layered underneath it with a black top. For footwear, I had on
low-heeled, black calf length boots with classic gold trim as in a riding boot.
I purchased both outside of my hometown, Cincinnati, at Premier Mall in pursuit
of clothing that fits my style and spirit. Back to the girl's bathroom
talk. Another woman, also in the bathroom spoke up... "we should do what
we want and not be concerned about what others think, especially at this time
in our life." Silence from the co-worker. Unfortunately, while dressing
the way you like seems like a mindless thing; far too many people, women
especially follow the crowd so that they can fit in, not ruffle the culture of
the crowd.
But when you are a business woman, who is trying to distinguish your business from the vast number of spectacular businesses...how can you do that and still be afraid to be bold! While my co-worker may not be able to break the cycle of 'being approved.' Being bold, has to be the first step into being authentic and stepping outside the norm as a business woman. You can't follow the crowd even when it comes to your attire. Having a nondescript look isn't going to get you noticed among the crowd of looking like everyone else. Yes, you have a great product, but a lot can be said for making a great visual impression before they see your product or service. Anyone can follow the crowd. What can you do, to stand out from the crowd of sameness. Say yes to who you are! Stay tune for more tips on "fitting into" your image!
